- 1). Measure and cut all of your wood components to make your jewelry or treasure boxes. It's easy to build several of these woodworking gifts at one time, and then decorate them differently to fit the recipient. The "Things You'll Need" list describes components to make one jewelry or treasure box; increase the quantity as needed to make more than one.
- 2). Sand all of the wood components with light grade sandpaper.
- 3). Place the 12-inch-long-by-8-inch-wide-by-1/2-inch-thick board on a flat surface. This is the base for your jewelry or treasure box.
- 4). Attach the two 12-inch-wide-by-6-inch-long-by-1/2-inch-thick boards perpendicular to the front and back edge of the base with wood screws. Make sure that the edges are flush.
- 5). Attach the two 8-inch-long-by-6-inch-wide-by-1/2-inch-thick boards to the sides of the base and to the edges of the front and back panels with wood screws. This completes the formation of the base of your treasure or jewelry box.
- 6). Remove any debris from the box and the leftover board for the lid. Prime and paint or stain the box, inside and out, and the lid. If you're making a jewelry box for your sister, you may want to paint the box in a pastel shade to match her room. If your gift will become your nephew's treasure box, stain it with a gel stain color to match his personality. Finish the box and the lid completely to your satisfaction, and then add a coat of polyurethane for shine and protection.
- 7). Complete the lid for your treasure or jewelry box by attaching a decorative handle to the center of the 13-inch-long-by-7-inch-wide-by-1/2-inch-thick board. Select the handle based on the recipient and the type of gift box you are making. A crystal knob is perfect for your mom's jewelry box, while a pewter handle might work best for dad's trinkets.
- 8). Decorate the edges of the lid with 1/2-inch ribbon, seashells, stones or wooden appliqués to hide the open wood grain. Decorate the lid and the rest of the box with any type of embellishments that fit the recipient and the purpose of your gift. For example, glue flat backed rhinestones or vintage jewelry to a jewelry box or fishing lures to your dad's treasure box. You can use strong craft glue such as E-6000 for this project.
