How to Cover Hinges to Reduce Condensation

    • 1). Check the weatherstripping around the edges of the door. If you find any holes, tears or missing pieces along the weatherstripping, remove the stripping from the door and replace it with new stripping. Close the door, and feel around the door to make sure air doesn’t come in through the cracks.

    • 2). Dry the face of the hinges with a rag to make sure they have no condensation remaining on them. Leave the hinges on the door if you want to cover them with a seal protectant such as wax.

    • 3). Apply wax to the face of the hinges on the door with a small paintbrush. Spread the wax in a thin, even layer over the surface of the hinge on the door and on the door frame.

    • 4). Take the door down from the door frame, leaving the hinges attached to the door if you want to paint the hinges instead of waxing. Tape heavy plastic over the doorway, securing it all around, to keep air from getting into your home from outside. Remove the hinges from the door.

    • 5). Paint the hinges with a waterproof paint on one side, and allow the paint to dry. Pick the hinges up once dry, and open and close them several time to break up the paint between each side of the hinge. Turn the hinge over, and paint the other side, allowing it to dry.

    • 6). Open and close the hinge several times to break up dried paint between the sides, and return the hinges to the door frame. Hang the door back on the hinges.
