- Corian is made of natural minerals and acrylic resins that are combined to form a homogeneous mixture, then molded into countertops, sinks and more. In the building and remodeling industry, Corian is what is referred to as a solid surface, meaning it is not made of layers of different materials. In contrast, a cast iron sink, for example, is made of iron that has been coated with a layer of porcelain. If the porcelain becomes scratched, the iron underneath shows through. If a Corian sink becomes scratched, only more Corian shows through. Because Corian is a solid surface, you can buff away fine or minor scratches.
- To buff away fine scratches, apply some liquid abrasive cleaner, such as Soft Scrub, directly to a damp cloth or sponge and spread it evenly over the scratched area. Rub it gently in a circular motion, then in a side-to-side motion, being careful not to use too much pressure, as this can further scratch your sink. Rinse the cleanser away and dry your sink with a towel. If the scratches are still noticeable, repeat with another application of cleanser, this time pressing a little harder.
- For deeper scratches and cuts, DuPont offers Corian Care Kits that include abrasive pads in several textures. To remove scratches, first wash your sink with liquid abrasive cleanser, then rinse well. While the sink is wet, buff the scratch gently with the kit's peach-colored pad, alternating circular and back-and-forth motions. Wash and dry your sink. If the scratches are still visible, repeat with the aqua sponge, then with the gray pad, until the scratches are successfully blended with the rest of the sink.
- Preventing scratches is easier than removing them. Always wipe your Corian sink dry after each use to prevent mineral buildup. Be mindful of knives, forks and other sharp implements you place in your sink. Additionally, do not pour boiling water into your Corian sink. If you have followed the scratch removal instructions and your sink is still scratched, call a trained repair technician to remove the scratch.
