- 1). Turn off the power to the existing light fixture from the main service panel by turning the breaker to the 'off' position.
- 2). Climb the ladder to reach the light fixture.
- 3). Take the light fixture apart using your screwdriver. Test the wires with the electric pen tester to make sure that the power to the fixture is off. Unscrew the existing wire nuts and disconnect the wires. Note which wires were on which color if the wires all have a black coating. Set the light fixture aside. Save all pieces to donate to Goodwill or some other secondhand store.
- 4). Assemble the new light fixture according to the manufacturer's directions.
- 5). Take the new fixture up the ladder and wire the fixture to the existing wires. Black or red is normally the the hot wire, white is the neutral wire, and the bare wire is the ground wire. Wire the fixture so that the colors of the wires correspond. The ground wire will be grounded to a green grounding screw present on the mounting bar of the fixture. Use the wire nuts to attach the wires to each other by twisting the wire nuts until the wire nut is tight. Tug on both wires that insert into the wire nut to ensure that they are both secure.
- 6). Push the fixture up to the ceiling and insert the mounting screws into the mounting bracket on the electrical box.
- 7). Go to the main service panel and switch on the breaker again. Turn on the light switch; the light should turn on and off when you flip the switch.
