What Happens When a Nook Screen Is Frozen?

    Inadequate Battery Charge

    • The most common culprit of an unresponsive Nook is an inadequate battery charge. Barnes & Noble recommends charging the battery regularly rather than discharging the battery completely and allowing the device to power off on its own. If the battery discharges completely, connect the Nook to an electrical outlet and allow it to charge for around three hours before use. The Nook will turn on once it has enough of a battery charge, and then you can check the battery indicator located on the right corner of the Status Bar. Do not turn off the Nook while the battery is charging.

    USB Mode

    • When you connect the Nook to a USB port on your computer, the computer typically recognizes it as a USB storage device. Occasionally, a problem may occur where the computer fails to recognize the Nook. When this happens, you cannot properly eject the Nook from the computer and the device can remain locked in USB mode. To return the Nook to standard mode, disconnect the Nook from the USB cable and press the power button for 20 seconds to reset the device. Then press the power button two seconds to turn on the Nook.

    Software Update

    • Barnes & Noble releases updates for the software installed on your Nook. Typically, these updates offer fixes to commonly reported problems and enhancements to the existing the software. The Nook automatically downloads and installs available updates when you connect to a wireless network. Although these updates usually take just a few minutes to install, you cannot use the Nook until the installation completes. Installing a software update does not delete the contents of your Nook. Tap the "Nook" symbol that appears in the far left corner of the Status Bar when an update becomes available to learn specific details about the update.

    Erase and Deregister

    • After charging the battery and resetting the device, the Nook sometimes will continue to experience frequent problems. When this occurs, you may need to deregister Nook and erase the contents from the device. This restores the Nook to factory settings and results in a loss of all data stored on the device. (Your reading materials remain in your Barnes & Noble library.) Open the Device Info screen and tap the “Erase and Deregister Device” menu option. Locate and tap the “Erase and Deregister Device” button and then tap the “Reset Nook” button when prompted to confirm. A message appears first informing you of the deregistration process and then informing you of the data clearing process. Once both processes complete and the Nook reboots you can register the device with your Barnes & Noble account.
