Softspikes are introduced, signalling the demise of metal spikes. Softspikes are easier on the golf course, particularly greens.
Already the only player to win the event back-to-back, Tiger Woods claims his third straight U.S. Junior Amateur.
Playing his first event as a professional, Phil Mickelson wins the PGA Tour Buick Invitational. Tom Kite's 19th and final PGA Tour win comes in the Nissan Los Angeles Open.
Bernhard Langer wins the Masters playing a persimmon driver. He would be the last player to win a major using a wood driver.
By the end of the year, most equipment manufacturers have stopped offering persimmon drivers, making only metal drivers.
