11. HallowFest and Spooky Pooch Parade at the Chicago Botanic Garden


From a spooky bat cave to face painting, ghost trains, pumpkin giveaways, spooky garden animals, Halloween snacks, and more, the Chicago Botanic Garden is promising a spooky time at their HallowFest October 21 and 22 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. and October 23 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is $14 for Botanic Garden members and $16 for non-members. Children 2 and under are free. Parking is $20 unless you are member. Then it is free. The Chicago Botanic Garden is also hosting a Spooky Pooch Parade on October 29 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for dogs and includes a costume contest. Prices for the Spooky Pooch Parade are $14 for members, $17 for non-mewmbers, or $20 at the door. One other Halloween event at the Chicago Botanic Garden to keep on your radar is the Trains, Tricks & Treats on October 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The garden's Model Rail Garden will be decorated with spider webs, spiders, ghosts, and pumpkins, as well as seasonal plant materials, bats, crawly creatures, a graveyard, and more.More »

12. Spooky Seas at the Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd Aquarium's costume party and Halloween sleepover takes place October 28-29 starting at 6:30 p.m. on the 28th through 9 a.m. on the 29th. There is an option to do the "event only" portion, which is 6:30 p.m. - 10 p.m. on the 28th. Spooky Seas includes themed presentations, animal encounters, dinner, breakfast, live DJ, and costume party. Cost is $60 per person ($55 for Shedd members). 13. Pumpkins in the Park 5K

On October 15, runners and walkers of all ages will descend on Chicago's Lincoln Park decked out in spooky attire for the annual Pumpkins in the Park 5K, which includes a CLIF KID Spooky Sprint for kids 12 and under. The 5K goes through Lincoln Park and includes a post-race party with live music, giveaways, and a costume contest for adults. 5K race fee is $30 before October 10, $35 thereafter. 14. Decorate a Haunted House at Chicago's American Girl Store

On October 26 and 27, you can turn a chocolate gingerbread house into a haunted mansion! American Girl Place on Michigan Avenue will supply the houses, as well as colorful candies and other treats for deecorations. Cost is $45 per person. Reservations are required. Call 877-247-5223.More »

15. Halloween Hustle 5K

The sixth annual Halloween Hustle 5K Fun Run & Walk will take place on October 29 at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Palatine, Illinois. All participants will receive a Halloween Hustle custom-designed shirt and trick-or-treat bag. Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners, as well as the top three winners in each age group. Cost is $30. Price increases October 22 to $40.More »

16. Richardson Adventure Farm

The Richardson Adventure Farm near Spring Grove, Illinois has what is said to be the most intricate corn maze in the world - a 28-acre "labyrinth" with more than 10 miles of trails. The maze also has a 700-foot zip line, a 50-foot observation deck, and ORBiting where you strap yourself inside a giant plastic ball and roll down a ramp. General admission is $12.95 (ages 13 and up) and $9.95 (ages 4 to 12). Kids under 3 are free and military with ID get half-off. Zip line is a separate charge ($15) as is ORBiting ($20 and up). 30-minute wagon rides are $4 per person. The farm is open through October 31. 17. Meadow View Corn Maze

The Meadow View Corn Maze located in Harvard, Illinois is a 10-acre maze honoring our military and the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The maze includes hay wagon rides, a two-acre pumpkin patch, a corn kettle pit, moon walks, and haunted nights in the maze, as well as brats and corn-on-the-cob. The Meadow View Corn Maze is open through October 30. Hours are 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. on Fridays; 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturdays; 12 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Sundays; and Monday - Thursdays by appointment only.
