Dogs can develop allergies too many different things.
Some of the more common ones are fleas, pollen, and dog food.
While dog food allergies are common, allergies to fleas are actually the most common type of allergies seen in dogs.
Most people that have dogs that have developed allergies to food normally have been feeding the same food to their dog for several years with no problems at all.
But then suddenly their dog becomes allergic to their food and it can seem to be a mystery as to why this happened now all of a sudden.
While veterinarians do not know exactly why some dogs develop allergies to food and others do not it is believed that certain genetics can play a role in this.
Essentially what happens is the dog's immune system overreacts to certain ingredients in the dog food and consider some harmful to the body and it and tries to attack them.
When this happens you get symptoms like diarrhea, flatulence, vomiting, and itchy skin.
Allergies can develop to a wide range of ingredients in the food.
This could be some type of protein in the meat, a certain type of grain like wheat, or even to certain additives or coloring in the food itself.
If your veterinarian suspects your dog does has a food allergy they are commonly put on a certain food trial for a couple of months.
The food trial consists of feeding a hypoallergenic diet consisting of a novel meat or grain that your dog has never eaten before.
