- 1). Hold the end of a large, sharp bolt cutter to the chain. The longer the bolt cutters are, the more leverage you'll be able to get when trying to cut the chain. Wear work gloves and safety goggles to prevent injury.
- 2). Apply pressure to both handles of the bolt cutters and move the cutters slightly forward and backward to create more friction. Even if the bolt cutters won't completely cut the chain, they will create a weakness in the chain that you can then follow up on to cut the chain all the way through.
- 3). Use a circular saw to further cut the chain in the same spot where the bolt cutters had already pitted. This may take several minutes and the chain will get very hot at the cut spot. Sparks will also fly, so keep your safety goggles on until the chain is completely cut.
