What Are Panic Attacks and How Do You Stop Them?

What are panic attacks, and how do you get a panic attack? How can it be stopped, and why does it feel like you are having a heart attack? All of the symptoms of a heart attack are present in a heart attack minus the fact that you are not dying.

A panic attack can be described as a hysterical state of mind. This state of mind keeps building and building. Usually people who have panic attacks don't know that they are having one which is why the panic keeps building, and they continue to be freaked out. If someone who is having a panic attack doesn't realize the symptoms, it could lead the sufferer down a bad path. They could eventually get to a point where they are contemplating suicide because they find no way of coping.

Stay Away From Stimulants: You should try your best to avoid stimulants like coffee, cigarettes, ephedra, ephedrine, ginseng, amphetamines, and even marijuana. This is because these substances reduce your body's ability to regulate the fight or flight response in your body.

Learn To Talk Yourself Down: If you start having a panic attacks you need to tell yourself a few things in your mind. First you need to reason with yourself saying that it is just a panic attacks, and that is it. You aren't having a heart attack, and it's not going to kill you. You may experience a tight chest, shortened breath, and a fluttering heart, but you aren't going to die, and you will get through it. Get yourself into a comfortable position, and concentrate on your breathing. You can slow down your breathing to help get yourself in a calmer state.

I would suggest doing a breathing exercise. This is a common one. Breathe in deeply, and hold your breath for a few seconds. Then after you've kept the air in for a few seconds, release your breath, and hold your breath after you've let all your air out. Then after a few seconds, breathe in again, and hold your breath. This will force your breathing to slow down, and eventually slow down your heart rate, and other bodily systems.

For those that have chronic panic attacks, you don't have all the time in the world to wait for a panic attacks to pop up, so you can practice dealing with it. So some sufferers of the condition may decide to have a prescription medication prescribed. There are a lot of drugs that can be used for panic attacks. Most of them are drugs like Xanax, or something like that. But many have found that beta blockers like atenolol and propanolol work even better. Beta blockers are very underused in pharmaceuticals for anxiety medication, but I can see them becoming more widely used as anxiety medication in the future.
