How to Make a Baby Tag Blanket

    • 1). Choose a colorful fleece print for your baby tag blanket. You can choose the same print for each side of the blanket or contrasting colors.

    • 2). Select a variety of different ribbons for the tags. Each piece of ribbon should be about 6 inches long. Vary the colors, textures and widths of the ribbons to provide your child with a full sensory experience when he handles the blanket. You'll need 12 to 16 pieces of ribbon for a 24-inch tag blanket.

    • 3). Measure and cut the fleece into two panels, each being 24 inches square. Pin them together back-to-back, with the wrong sides facing out, so that when you turn the blanket inside out, the print is what you see.

    • 4). Fold each ribbon in half and pin it to the blanket with the loop part facing the inside of the blanket. The ribbons should be on top of the top piece of fleece with the cut sides along the outside edges of the blanket. Space the tags evenly on all sides of the blanket, but leave an empty spot of about 3 inches on one side so you can later turn the blanket inside out.

    • 5). Sew the blanket together, working between 3/4 inch and 1 inch from the edge of the fleece. Give each ribbon a firm tug to be sure the tags are securely fastened to the fleece. You can sew by hand or use a sewing machine. When you get to the empty spot where there are no ribbons, stop sewing.

    • 6). Remove all of the straight pins from the fleece and tags. Turn the blanket inside-out like you would a pillowcase. The print should be right-side out, with the tag loops on the outside hem of the blanket.

    • 7). Sew the remainder of the blanket closed.
