Prevention for Dark Circles Under Eyes

    • Fair skinned individuals and those with deep-set eyes are more likely to exhibit dark circles. While no one can change their genes, there are preventive measures to address this eye issue. Thin skin automatically shows dark circles, therefore it is important to prevent further thinning. Avoid stretching the eye's skin when applying cosmetics.

      A woman's skin pales significantly during menstruation and when she is pregnant. That lets dark circles shine through. Once the condition is finished, skin often returns to its healthy state.

      Some diseases have dark circles as a symptom. These include Addison's disease, heart failure and kidney, liver or thyroid disease. Dealing with the underlying problem often solves the side effect.

      Aging cannot be prevented, but proper attention given it can stave off its side effects. Staying out of the sun is key. If you are going to be in the sun, use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to provide. Also wear sunglasses.

    Environmental Issues

    • Allergies can trigger dark under-eye circles. Typical allergies include dust, pet dander and pollen and are treatable with antihistamines. Environmental allergies, like those associated with feather or down products, can be abated by removing the items.

      Certain foods contribute to dark circles. These include dairy, soy, and wheat products as well as egg whites and yeast. Elimination of these foods will solve the problem in most cases.

    Diet Deficiencies

    • Deficiencies in diet contribute to under-eye circles. Diets rich in vitamins B6, C, and D, as well as folic acid and iron are essential. It is also important to consume foods high in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables.

    Problematic Habits

    • Drinking alcohol, caffeine, coffee, and soda can cause dark circles. These should be cut down or eliminated.

      Inadequate sleep causes skin paleness and makes dark circles prominent. At least eight hours of sleep per night is required.

      Dehydration is unhealthy and directly leads to dark circles under the eyes. Therefore, drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day is essential. Skin can also be hydrated in other ways. Applying slices of cucumber, whole figs, mint leaves, pieces of potato or wet tea bags over the eyes for 15 minutes can decrease the appearance of under-eye circles. Massaging almond, avocado, grape seed, jojoba, olive, peanut or sesame essential oils into the circles can fade existing ones while preventing new ones. Shea butter or vitamin E or K cream also works well.

      Fluid retention also increases dark circles. Try lightly tapping around the eyes to disperse excess fluid.
