How to Replace a Starter on a 1996 Lincoln Town Car

    Starter Removal

    • 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable using a socket wrench and bend the cable to the side.

    • 2). Raise the Town Car with a car hoist or support it with jack stands.

    • 3). Disconnect the negative battery terminal cable from the front of the starter using a socket wrench. Replace the nut on to the starter bolt. If equipped with a starter mounted solenoid, disconnect the push-on connector from the solenoid.

    • 4). Remove the upper and lower starter bolts using a socket wrench, and remove the starter. The starter bolts run through the starter mounting bracket and into the starter.

    Starter replacement

    • 1). Position the new starter into the starter mounting bracket. Slide the upper and lower starter mounting bolts through the bracket and into the starter. Tighten the starter mounting bolts using a torque wrench to 15-20 foot-pounds.

    • 2). Reconnect the electrical lead by pushing the push-on wire to the attached solenoid if equipped, or bolting the negative battery terminal wire to the front of the starter using a torque wrench. Tighten the nut to 80-124 inch-pounds.

    • 3). Lower the vehicle to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable using a socket wrench.
