ATV Trails in Massachusetts

      ATVs have increased in popularity and trail riding is a favorite pastime enjoyed by many. Some Massachusetts state forests offer ATV riders an assortment of trails of varying degrees of difficulty. There are also private trails available for riding. Be aware of the Massachusetts state laws regulating ATV registration and usage before hitting the trails. Each park has its own guidelines and season for riding. Be sure to check out each particular park's rules before visiting.

    Pittsfield State Forest

    • Located in the northwest corner of the state, this state forest offers ATV riders 17 square miles of trails, most suitable for amateurs. Cruise through the woodlands, past streams and waterfalls. Trails are marked but not rated. All ATVs must be registered. As of January 2011, you must acquire a permit to ride this state forest's trails. While there is no fee, only 50 permits are issued for any one day. The riding season runs from May 1st until the last Sunday in November.

    F. Gilbert State Forest

    • Set in Foxboro, in southeastern Massachusetts, this state park offers eight miles of motorized riding trails through a rocky, woodland loop. There is no fee, nor is a permit required to ride. Because of the dense forest, insects can be plentiful in the spring and summer months. The trails are appropriate for novice, amateur and expert riders. Hazards should be marked, but use your own caution. ATVs must be registered to use on public property. The park season runs between May 1st and November 30th.

    Capeway Rovers Motocross

    • This is a privately owned track that is promoted as the oldest motocross track on the east coast. Located in Carver in southeastern Massachusetts just west of Plymouth and north of the Cape Cod Canal, the park is set amongst forest and cranberry bogs. Trails are groomed and watered. There is an annual membership fee; as of January 2011 the fee is $75 per year if mailed in advance or $100 if purchased on site. There is also a $20 per rider fee. Safety gear and insurance is mandatory to ride on the track. It is open year round.
