How to Connect a Dryer to a Breaker Box

    • 1). Measure the distance from the breaker box to where you are putting the 220 plug for the dryer. Cut the wire with the wire cutters to this distance, and cut an extra foot for good measure.

    • 2). Use your drill and drill bit to drill holes to run the wire from the breaker box to the 220 plug. Use the wire cleaners to clean insulation off the wires. The wires are color-coded as so: black is positive, white is negative and bare wire, or copper, is the ground.

    • 3). Hook the wires to the plug, and mount it to the wall. Go back to the breaker box and shut it off for safety reasons. Use your voltage tester to make sure the breaker box is off. Clean the wires the way you did in Step 2. Hook the positive and negative wires to the breaker box. Hook the ground wire to the ground bar in the breaker box, and hook the breaker into the breaker box.

    • 4). Turn on your breaker box. With your voltage tester, check the 220 plug, and test it to make sure it is working. Make sure the tester reads 240 on negative and positive, 120 on negative and ground, and 120 on positive and ground.
