Is Google Still the King?

As a Website owner I have done my best to appease Google.
I have tried very hard to get my site a few page 1; or even 2 or 3, spots.
Yet Google gives me no love.
I update my site with new content at least 3 or more times a week, depending on how hard my creativity is sparking.
I use my own content, and have never used a ghost writer or anyone else's articles.
While I don't laser focus my keywords, most of the content I put up has to do with my site.
So the question is, whats holding me back? Apparently I have done something, or I'm not doing something.
But what is it? Could it be something like back links? The fact that Google has a bad habit of suddenly changing its rules doesn't help.
It seems like every time they come up with some new way to keep out "bad sites", they really just make it harder for a site with little money behind it to achieve a good position.
Not that long ago Google bought YouTube.
Now YouTube used to be a great place to find fun videos, and there were always interesting things on the front page.
Now its more about who can pay the most to be number one, than who deserves it.
The Same can be said about Google.
Whatever their claims, they care more about making money than doing the job they're supposed to do.
The people that can afford the better content generators, the better back link generating methods, that can keep ad words going longest, have the upper hand.
Yet, some sites with little funding do make it to the top, even if only briefly.
After checking out some of these sites, I have come to the conclusion that they are not doing anything special, they mostly just get lucky.
They put something up that lots of people heard about and wanted to see.
That creates a synergistic response from the search engines, allowing those sites to get good page rank.
Because of this I say Google is no longer King, and perhaps I dare say search engines in general.
The New King is Viral Marketing.
Most people might still find sites through searches, but only the power of a viral video, picture or story can catapult an underfunded site to search engine success.
