The most important thing that you can do for your child when they start bed wetting is to reassure them. They need to know that it is perfectly normal for children their age to wet the bed. Bed wetting can be caused just by a child being frightened to get out of bed during the night to go to the toilet. Leave the light on the landing or get your child a torch or nightlight so that they can see to get to the bathroom.

It could be as simple as the child drinking too much before they go to bed and the bladder not being able to hold all the urine. So make sure they don't have a lot to drink for a couple of hours before bed and cut out any drinks with caffeine in. Getting the child up a couple of hours after they have gone to sleep and take them to the toilet can help as long as they are awake when they go.

Get your child to practice pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the bladder or to hold their wee a little while before going to the toilet to stretch it. Try practicing getting up to go to the toilet during the day. When your child needs a wee, they should go and get into bed and pretend to be asleep, pretend to wake up, go to the toilet and pretend to go back to bed and go back to sleep.

Above all, reassure your child that you still love them, even after they have had an accident. They feel very bad about themselves after they have wet the bed and, if they see it has upset you, the will feel even worse.
