Radio Removal Instructions for a Pontiac G6

    Safety

    • Before performing any task involving the Pontiac's electrical system, you must first disconnect the negative battery cable (or grounding cable). The grounding cable is black and connects the G6 battery to the frame or chassis of the vehicle. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to loosen the cable's clamp. Remove the clamp from the negative lead post and set it away from the battery until your work is completed.

Removing a component connected to the vehicle's electrical system without first disconnecting the grounding cable can lead to severe damage to the grounding cable and other parts of the electrical system.

    Accessing the Stereo

    • There are dash panels that need to be removed to access the Pontiac G6 radio. First, open the glove-box. Push in the sides of the glove-box hatch to release it. Let the door hang open.

Remove the panel above the glove-box by removing the bolts at the top left and right of the opening with a 7mm socket and ratchet. Remove the panel.

Use the 7mm socket to remove the two bolts located under the steering column. This will allow you to remove the dash panel to the left of the center console.

Pry the dash trim panel that surrounds the stereo from the dashboard by hand. Start at the bottom and work your hands around the perimeter of the panel until it is released from the dashboard. Pull the wire connection to the hazard switch from the panel to free it completely.

    Removing the Radio

    • The Pontiac G6 radio is secured in the stereo mounting bracket by six 7mm bolts, three on each side. Use a 7mm socket and drive to remove the bolts. Pull the stereo deck from the stereo dock. Pull the unit far enough to access the wire connections to the rear of the radio.

Grab the wire groups and pull them from the stereo. Grip the plastic wiring binders, not the wires themselves. There will be four groups: the antenna, the speakers, the amplifier and the power supply. Once they have all been disconnected, the G6 radio will be completely freed from the vehicle's dash.
