A Geometry Mosaic Craft

    Coasters

    • Cut glass is a beautiful medium for geometric mosaic coasters. To make coasters, fill four reusable coaster molds with plaster, according to the instructions on the packaging. While you are waiting for the plaster to set up, arrange small pieces of cut glass so that the four patterns look interesting together. They might patterns based on four variations of repeating squares, for instance, or one each of concentric circles, squares, diamonds and triangles After the plaster dries, remove the coasters from the molds and apply a thick layer of adhesive to the top, then set the glass tiles into the adhesive. When this is dry, apply the grout according to the instructions on the packaging.

    Picture Frame

    • There are molds for picture frames, but it is easier to simply buy an inexpensive, flat wooden frame so that the backing, glass, and easel or hooks for hanging are included. Set the glass and backing aside and the rough wooden frame with sandpaper before applying adhesive. A geometric mosaic can be made with many types of materials, but the more irregular the shapes the more difficult it will be to fit them into a geometric pattern. A square frame will help keep the design geometric. When the tiles are set in place and the adhesive dries, apply the grout according to the instructions on the packaging.

    Tissue Box Covers

    • Kids can create their own mosaic tissue boxes using small squares and triangles of colored paper as the tiles. Plastic covers for tissue boxes can be purchased for less than a box of tissues. Have the child decide on the shapes and colors he want to use -- at least two colors are needed. Cut the shapes from colored paper. Cut butcher paper for each child, tape it to the work surface and trace the shapes of the box sides onto the paper. The child can arrange and rearrange the shapes until he finds the pattern he wants to glue onto his tissue-box cover.

    Planters

    • Kids learning about nature will enjoy gathering pebbles, shells or seeds to create a mosaic planter. Use a terra-cotta flower pot as a base. After the children have gathered their materials, they can arrange their designs on paper first, then apply adhesive to the flower pot and start creating. Grout can be used with a pebble mosaic, but would not work with seeds or shells.
