Pendant Lighting Components

    • Pendant lights have few individual components.light image by fafoutis from Fotolia.com

Pendant lights are popular additions to kitchens, since they provide easily controlled ambient light without taking up valuable counter or ceiling space. Pendant lighting can also serve as a dramatic focal point in any room. Pendant lights come in an array of materials and colors and can work in any style of decor, from rustic to ultra-modern. Their minimalist design requires few individual components, making pendant light installation a relatively simple do-it-yourself project.

    Mounting Base

    • The mounting base attaches to the ceiling to support the rest of the pendant light components. If you are replacing a light fixture, simply install the mounting base in its place. If you are installing the pendant lighting in a spot without a light fixture, be sure you screw the mounting base into ceiling joists, since drywall alone will not be able to support the fixture's weight.

    Decorative Canopy

    • The pendant light's decorative canopy attaches directly to the mounting base, concealing the wires running through the ceiling from the attic.

    Hanging Mechanism

    • Some pendant fixtures hang from the electrical wiring, while others are attached to a decorative metal pole that conceals the wiring. All hanging mechanisms emerge from the decorative canopy.

    Electrical Wiring/Light Bulb Socket

    • Pendant lighting uses the same wiring as any other basic home light fixture, making it easy to replace your current fixtures. The light bulb sockets may vary, depending on the size and style of the required bulbs.

    Shade

    • A pendant light's shade, which covers the light bulb, is the most important feature to consider when choosing a light to complement your decor. Pendant lighting shades are usually glass or metal and are available in a wide array of shapes, sizes and colors. A sleek silver shade will quietly complement a spartan decorating style, while a bulbous, multicolored handblown glass shade will stand out as an art element in a more adventurous decor.
