How Can I Add Space to My C Drive?

    • 1). Perform a simple house-cleaning on your system by going through all your files, media, documents and programs and deleting anything that you do not use. Programs generally will take up the most space. Also you could consider moving files and other media to a external storage device like a flash drive in order to make more room.

    • 2). Clean up your favorites menu on your web browser. Believe it or not, lots of favorites saved in your favorites menu can take up space on your C Drive. Go to "Favorites" in Internet Explorer and select "Organize." Click to highlight any unnecessary favorites, and then select the "Delete" button at the bottom of the window. Go to "Bookmarks" in Firefox and make deletions from the list.

    • 3). Right-click on the "C Drive" in Windows Explorer, and select "Properties."

    • 4). Select the "Disk Cleanup" button. The Disk Clean up feature on your computer will sort through all the files and programs on your computer and decide what could be rearranged or deleted to save you room. Based on the report, select the recommendations that you agree with and delete or rearrange those files and programs.

    • 5). Move documents and other data from the C drive to another drive like D. Right-click on "My Documents" on your desktop or My Computer folder in Windows XP, Vista, and 7, and select "Properties."

    • 6). Select the "Target" tab. For Windows Vista users, you will need to select the "Location" tab. If the D drive is the drive you want to move your files to, select D instead of C in the Target location box. Then click "Move."

    • 7). Defragment your disk in Windows XP by going to "Performance and Maintenance" in your Control Panel, and then selecting the text "Rearrange items on your hard drive..." This process will also create room on your hard drive.

Defragment your disk in Vista by clicking on the start menu and selecting "All Programs." Then click on "Accessories," and then "System Tools." Once in System Tools you can select the "Disk Defragmenter."

Access the Disk Defragmenter in Windows 7 by clicking on "Search" from start menu and entering "Disk Defragmenter." Then from the list of results click on the "Disk Defragmenter" to start it.

    • 8). Run a virus scan on your computer. Viruses, adware, and malware can take up a lot of space, so it is important to rid your system of these.
