How to Hang Copper Lanterns

    Top Hanger

    • 1). Assess the copper lantern to determine if you can insert nails into any portion of the top. Copper lanterns often have finials or decorative elements attached to the top of the glass. If so, insert a nail on either side of the top center section of the lantern. If you sand the striking end of your hammer, it will roughen the surface and help prevent the hammer from slipping off the nail head.

    • 2). Measure the distance from one nail to the other over the top of the lantern. Add 6 inches to the measurement. Cut a section of 20-gauge copper wire to fit the total.

    • 3). Wrap one end of the wire around one nail and one end of the wire around the other nail to create a wire hanger.

    Body Hanger

    • 1). Measure the width of the lantern across the base. Measure the height of your copper lantern from the base to the top. Double the height measurement and add this number to the width measurement. Add 8 inches to the total in order to gauge the length of wire you will need to make a hanger for the lantern.

    • 2). Cut two lengths of 20-gauge copper wire equal to the measurement in step 1.

    • 3). Insert four nails into the round base of your copper lantern, spaced equally from each other. If your lantern base is square, insert a nail in the center of each side. If your copper lantern is rectangular, insert one nail in the center of each end. Make sure to leave at least 1/4 inch of the nails exposed.

    • 4). Wrap the ends of the copper wire strips around the nails opposite each other on the base of your copper lantern. Pull the wires up to form a cage for the lantern.

    • 5). Attach a small "S" hook where the wires cross at the top. If your copper lantern is rectangular and you only have one wire, pinch the wire in the center to form an inverted "U," which will keep the S hook in place.
