Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, also known as HVAC systems, require regular checkups and maintenance to keep them working efficiently. You can do most of these tasks, but neglecting maintenance, as well as improper installation or defective equipment, will require repairs and replacement work, usually by a professional technician. You may want to ask yourself a few questions before selecting and paying someone to make the repairs on your HVAC. - Even the most energy efficient heating and cooling system fails to save you money if incorrectly installed or improperly adjusted, says the Department of Energy. Avoid making your installation decision solely on price, or you may end up with poor service and no warranty. If your system fails as a result of faulty installation, find a different contractor/technician to reinstall it. When under warranty, contact the installer and ask him to repair it as the service is free of charge. The quality of the installation is a priority because quality determines energy cost, comfort and durability, according to the Department.
- The Department of Energy offers the following tips: Ask neighbors and friends to refer someone they have contracted and recommend; focus on local companies; look for licensed, insured contractors; ask the technician about her previous experience; check references; and inquire with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Once you've selected professionals using these methods, obtain at least three bids for the work. The bid should include a firm completion date, itemized work and calculations of costs, parts and installation warranty and a payment schedule.
- According to Home Inspector Locators, certain common repairs are associated with HVAC systems. They provide a 2010 average cost guide for a three-bedroom home. In humid climates, ACs may not adequately reduce humidity, so you'll want to retrofit a drum-type humidifier to your system to fix the problem. The average cost of this repair is $200 to $300. The cost of rebuilding the firepot, or refractory on a boiler costs between $500 and $800. Replacing a valve on heat radiators costs between $75 and $150. Cleaning ductwork starts at $250. Replacing a heat pump or air conditioning compressor costs between $800 and $1,400.
