Installation of a Trane Package Unit

    • 1). Place the unit on a concrete pad. Elevate the unit 3 inches to 12 inches above the pad in areas where snowfall occurs. Use concrete blocks. Place the heat pump in a location that allows for airflow to the condenser coil and service access to the compressor. Follow the installation instructions and local building codes for the proper clearances.

    • 2). Determine the two penetration points in the exterior wall between the wall studs for the return air and supply ducts between the wall studs. Mark the dimensions based on the diameter of the ducts. Cut the holes in the exterior wall for the return air and supply ducts with a reciprocating saw.

    • 3). Install canvas connectors to the unit. These flexible ducts minimize noise and vibrations. Insert a duct for the return air supply and the supply into the connectors. The air return pulls air out of the home into the unit. Install the filter for the return air duct per the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 4). Connect the return air and supply ducts to an existing ductwork system or run new ducts according to plan. Supply ducts distribute air to the rooms in the home. Seal all joints with foil duct tape.

    • 5). Caulk the gap between the opening and ducts in the exterior wall. Place the first elbow in the ductwork system at least 2 feet away from the package unit.

    • 6). Insulate the ductwork in insulation with a vapor barrier. Use 2-inch fiberglass blanket insulation. The insulation minimizes the loss of heated or cool air.

    • 7). Install a drain line consisting of 3/4-inch diameter copper pipe in the condensate drain connection. Slope the pipe down and horizontally to the drain. Make the pitch 1/4-inch per linear foot of pipe or per local codes. Do not reduce the diameter of fittings in the drain line.

    • 8). Shut off the electricity at the house primary electrical panel before proceeding with electrical connections. Follow the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70 and the wiring schematic in the installation instructions. Install a weatherproof disconnect switch within sight of the unit. Some local building codes require a licensed electrician to complete electrical connections.

    • 9). Install the thermostat in a location free of drafts, away from windows or doors and out of the line of direct sunlight. Use low-voltage wiring for the thermostat. Install the thermostat in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure a level, properly wired and programmed device.

Make final adjustments to the control panel and equipment. Follow the checklist in the Trane installation manual’s checklist to ensure the unit is ready for operation.Turn on the electricity and test the unit.
