How to Convert an External USB Drive to NTFS

    • 1). Log in to your computer, click the Start button, click on Run, type "CMD" (without quotes) into the Run box and press the OK button.

    • 2). Enter the following command into the command prompt, without quotes, then press the Enter key: "convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs" where "drive_letter" is the letter of the USB drive you have attached to your computer. For example, if the drive letter of the external USB drive is "F", enter "convert F: /fs:ntfs".

    • 3). Enter in the volume label of the drive you are converting when you see a message appear in the command prompt asking you to enter it. (The volume label is the name of the drive, which is displayed next to the drive letter when you view the drive in Windows Explorer.) You will see "Conversion Complete" in a command prompt message once the conversion has finished.

    • 4). Close the command prompt.
