Making wine at home is easy and inexpensive as most of the materials and/or equipments required for it is either locally available or maybe even available at home.
For making about 4 liters of wine at home,
You will need:-
. Black grapes 1.5 Kgs
. Sugar 1.0 Kg
. Yeast 15 gms (dissolved in 100 ml of lukewarm water)
. Purified water 2.6 litres
. A large jar. Choose a ceramic or a plastic jar with a narrow mouth and an airtight lid.
. Wooden pestle or masher
. Wooden spoon with a handle long enough to reach the bottom of the jar.
. Large fine holed seive
The Method:
. Boil and cool the water.
. Sterilize the jar.
. Wash the grapes 3-4 times to remove all the grit and chemicals from fertilizers etc. Remove stems from the grapes and drain out the water. Now spread out the grapes on a perforated tray to let them dry.
. Put the grapes in the jar and smash them with the masher to take out juice.
. Add the cooled water and the dissolved yeast to the jar.
. Add half of the sugar ( 500 gms).
. Mix together the contents of the jar with the spatula.
. Now close the lid of the jar tightly and make it airtight.Keep the jar in a cool dark place.
. For the next one month, open the jar everyday and using a clean, dry wooden spatula, mix the contents of the jar lightly. Keep it back in the cool dark place after replacing the lid of the jar. This has to be done everyday for the next 1 month.
Steps to be followed at the end of 1 month:-
. Strain the contents of the jar into another container.
. Add the other half of the sugar ( 500 gms) to the strained liquid and pour it back into the jar. Make it airtight again before returning it to a cool dark place.
. let it stand undisturbed for about 21 days.
On the last day, open the jar and siphon off the clear liquid from the top of the jar into clean, dry wine bottles without disturbing the sediments at the at the bottom of the jar.
Voila! Your home made wine is ready. Wine is something that can create sophistication in any environment and event, and when you know how to make wine at home, what more can be expected by your guests!
