Instructions for Loom Knit Caps

    • 1). Choose your yarn. Circular looms tend to be a fairly large gauge, so it's necessary to either use a chunky yarn or double strands of a worsted weight yarn. One skein of yarn is usually plenty to finish a single strand adult hat. If you are using two yarns together, then start with two skeins. Be sure to match the lot number of your yarn if you are using the same color. Feel free to experiment by mixing two colors together to create a look you love.

    • 2). Choose the correct loom size for the hat you wish to knit. Looms come in sizes for infants, children, adults and large adults.

    • 3). Make a slip knot in your yarn. Attach it to the peg on the outside of the loom. Pull your working yarn up between the first and last pegs of the loom.

    • 4). Hold your yarn fairly loosely and e-wrap each peg of the loom. The e-wrap stitch is simply wrapping the yarn around the peg, going from the behind the peg to the front and around, crossing the yarn in the back. This leaves one solid loop of yarn on the front of each peg.

    • 5). Continue to e-wrap for a second time around the entire loom. Stop when there are two solid loops of yarn on each peg. Hold or secure the loose end of your yarn so that it does not unravel. Now, you may begin to knit.

    • 6). Knit off each stitch by using the special loom tool. Pull the bottom loop of yarn up and over the top loop. This will leave just one loop of yarn left on the peg. Continue doing this until all pegs have only one loop. E-wrap the entire loom again.

    • 7). Knit off and e-wrap for 3 to 5 inches, depending on the size of the finished hat. To make a brim, knit until there is one loop on all pegs and push those loops to the bottom of the pegs. Reaching into the loom, pull up your first row of stitches, placing them back on the corresponding pegs. The long piece of yarn that is left from when you began should be between the first and last peg. You then knit off each peg as you have before and begin e-wrapping for the next row.

    • 8). Knit and e-wrap each row until the hat is between 6 and 9 inches, depending upon the finished size, if you do not wish to add a brim to your hat. Children's hats will be about 6 inches, while adult hats will be 8 to 9 inches. Experiment with size for the best fit for you. This hat will roll nicely on the bottom.

    • 9). Stop knitting when you have reached the desired size. Cut the end of your wrapping yarn, leaving a few inches. Using a yarn needle and about 2 feet of yarn, sew through each stitch. Do this by bringing the needle under each stitch and up through it. Once it is threaded, pull the loop off the loom. Do this to each stitch, ensuring that the end of the yarn is still sticking out from the first stitch.

    • 10

Turn your hat inside out. Pull the two ends of yarn tightly together. Tie a square knot and then tie the end of your wrapping yarn to the knot. Trim the yarn tails to 3 to 4 inches and weave them into the hat. Turn your hat right side out, and you are finished.
