- 1). Turn off the water at the main supply valve. This valve is usually located in the basement, but if your home does not have a basement, it will be on the exterior wall of your home.
- 2). Turn on the shower faucet to drain water from the pipes.
- 3). Cover the drain with a rag to prevent small screws from falling down the drain.
- 4). Pry off the handle cap with a screwdriver, then unscrew the handle screw located inside the handle.
- 5). Pull off the handle. Use a handle puller or pliers if the handle is sticking.
- 6). Unscrew the packing nut from the faucet with pliers or an adjustable wrench.
- 7). Remove the stem assembly from the faucet by unscrewing it, then unscrew the bib screw, which attaches the washer to the faucet.
- 8). Take the old washer off the faucet. Check the valve seat hole for signs of damage by sliding your finger around the surface. If it feels rough, replace it.
- 9). Remove the stem from the retaining nut by unscrewing it. Inspect the thread on the stem and replace the stem if it's damaged.

Replace the O-ring on the stem and attach a new washer with a new stem screw. - 11
Re-assemble the faucet by reversing the steps you took in disassembling it. - 12
Turn on the water at the main supply valve.
