As a former Home Inspector, I was privileged to see some true home repair night mares! I know, not everyone is handy. I also know that not everyone who wants to be handy is and that many who think they are handy are not. I know this because as a home inspector, I've seen it too many times!
The good news is that everyone can improve upon their skills if they will just step back, and admit to knowing what they don't know. In today's modern world, there are so many resources for the Home owner, it isn't funny! There's truly no excuse for botching a job. No wait. Let me rephrase that. There no legitimate excuse for botching a repair job on a home these days.
If you're a new home owner or thinking about under taking some DIY projects, here are 3 must have tools around your home.
The first one is a cordless drill. Why? Good question. A cordless drill is a very useful tool that has many uses and will last years. Personally, I like name brand cordless drills like Bosch, Dewalt, Milwauke, Hitachi. In that orders.
With a cordless drill, you can do a variety of jobs. The cordless drill can be used as a power screw driver if you have the right bits.
It can also be used as a nut driver if you have the nut driving bits.
It can be used to stir paint with a paint stirring attachment.
And obviously it can be used as a drill.
The second tool you need around your home is a tape measure. You'll be surprised at how being off just a half inch can really complicate your life. If your refrigerator is off by just a little bit, it may not fit into the space allocated for it. Same goes with your cook range and built in microwave.
Few things are as frustrating as having to move something because you "thought" you had enough room. I've been guilty of this a time or two myself!
Buy an inexpensive tape measure and be done with those "almost fits" problems!
Thirdly, every home owner should have a DIY manual that outlines how to repair common household problems. There are a lot of good ones on the market today. Black & Decker makes an outstanding one. You can find it at your local Lowes or Home Depot as well as Amazon.
If you'll take the time to follow the directions, you'll find that home repairs and upgrades don't have to be a test of patience. They can be rewarding adventures that lead to bigger and better things as your skills improve!
