American Women Inventors

Sybilla Masters could very well be one of the first American women inventors in America when America was ruled by the English. The avaialable records show that in 1715 she was given a patent for the method of making cornmeal from maize. It was difficult for women those days to get patent and she was given the patent in her husband's name with the patent stating that method was found by his wife, Sybilla Masters.

Gertrude Belle Elion, Nobel Prize winner in Medicine in 1988 had discovered many new drugs including the drug for AIDS, AZT. She was an American biochemist and also a pharmacologist. She developed these drugs working alone and also while working with another scientist George H. Hitchings. She has contributed hugely in the field of medicine by inventing many medicines including medicines for leukemia, gout, malaria, herpes and many other diseases. She also developed the first immune-suppressive agent used in organ transplants. Apart from prestigious Nobel Prize she also won other awards including National Medal of Science (1991) and the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award (1997). She is also the first woman to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame when she was honored in 1991.Gertrude Elion died in North Carolina at the age of 81 in 1999.

Another Nobel Prize winner in Medicine from America is Linda B. Buck, among the most prominent American women inventors. She is famous for her work on the olfactory system. She worked with another renowned scientist Richard Axel to win the Nobel Prize in 2004 for their work in olfactory system. She was also an another scientist who got inducted to National Academy of Sciences in 2004.She got her PhD in immunology in 1980 from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and took her post doctoral degree from Columbia University.

Renowned Molecular Biologist , Anita B. Roberts made pioneering observations in the filed of medicine about the protein, TGF-ß (transforming growth factor beta) .This protein found to have critical role in healing wounds and bone fractures, has also found to have a role in blocking or stimulating cancers. Roberts was the second most-cited female scientist as of 2005. She got her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1968 and did her postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Roberts discovered that the TGF- ß protein helps in signaling other growth factors in the body to heal wounds and fractures quickly. It was also found later that TGF-ß has an effect on regulating heartbeat and eye's response to aging. Dr Roberts continued her research in finding the affect of TGF-ß on cancer and has found that while it inhibits the growth of some cancers, it stimulates the growth in advanced cancers, including cancers of the breast and lung.

Dr. Roberts, former president of the Wound Healing Society was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2005. She was diagnosed with stage IV gastric cancer in March 2004. She has received many acclodes for her amazing contributions in the science field including FASEB Excellence in Science Award, Leopold Griffuel Prize and Komen Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction.
