- Many people write New Year's resolutions, and Christians are no exception. Have kids create a skit about the types of resolutions they think honor God, resolutions the entire children's ministry should work on together or how Christians should deal with New Year's resolutions. The kids might begin with a list of the kinds of things they believe they should be doing, but are not, then end with ideas on how to involve others in making a commitment to better spiritual practices.
- Many people see the coming of the new year as a reason to hope that things will be better. Ask kids to perform a skit about what they hope they will see in the coming year. Have them explain to a non-Christian friend why they believe so strongly that blessings will come in with the new year. Hebrews 11:1 states, "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see." Children may use this Scriptures as their explanation.
- The kids write and act out a drama about a new convert who uses New Year's resolutions to begin her new life. While saying her prayers on New Year's Eve, Mary asks for strength to make some changes in her life. She knows she has some changes to make in order to become a new person in Christ as it says in 2 Corinthians 5:17. She is startled when God begins to chat with her during the prayer. The kids can use Bible promises such as Exodus 15:2 and Psalm 18:32 as God's promises to Mary.
- Following Christmas, the season of Epiphany celebrates the wise men's journey to Bethlehem. The kids play the wise men on a shopping spree to choose suitable gifts for the infant Jesus. The skit should explain why the wise men are following a star and the reason they brought gold for a king, frankincense for a priest and myrrh for a healer. The skit stops at the end of the shopping trip since the wise men are not due to arrive at the manger until January 6.
