- 1). Turn the piece of clothing inside out.
- 2). Locate the hem, neckline or waistband. You will find a hem on the bottom of shorts, pants and shirts. Since these areas are the thickest part of the article of clothing, it will be harder to see the ink through the material.
- 3). Write the name on the hem, neckline or waistband of the clothing. Press lightly with the laundry marker as you write -- while porous-tip markers are not supposed to bleed, it is still wise to use light pressure when writing on the material.
