How to Upholster Outdoor Cushions

    • 1). Measure your cushion to get an idea of how much fabric you will need to purchase. Measure the width, length, and depth of the cushion to get dimensions for your fabric panels.

    • 2). Divide the measurement of the depth in half and add an extra inch to that measurement to allow for seams. Add this to your length and width measurement. For example, if your cushion is 20 inches wide, 20 inches long, and 6 inches deep, you would need two fabric panels that are 26 inches by 26 inches.

    • 3). Remove the old upholstery from the cushion. If the foam cushion is not misshapened or moldy, you can reuse it. If not, purchase a new cushion the same size as the original one.

    • 4). Select an upholstery fabric that is made specifically for outdoor use.

    • 5). Cut your two fabric panels to the measurements. Pin them together, right sides facing each other. Sew a seam around three sides, leaving the fourth side open. Remove the pins and turn your panels right side out.

    • 6). Slip the cushion inside of the sewn panels. Turn the raw edges of the opened seam toward the inside and pin the opening together. Stitch the seam together, closing the opening and encasing the cushion inside of the panels. Remove the pins and cut off any loose threads. Your cushion is now ready to be used.
