- One of the worst things that a person can do is to place an electric space heater near flammable objects. Even though there is not a flame within the heater, there is enough heat produced that could start a fire. Never place the heater near drapes, rugs, carpets, clothing, furniture or paper. Be sure that no one in the home or office uses the space heater as a dryer by placing articles of clothing on it. Improper placement of the space heater is the cause of many fires.
- A space heater is able to heat up a room within a matter of minutes. Because of this power, there is no reason to leave a heater unsupervised. If you are leaving the house or even just leaving the room, you need to turn off the space heater and unplug it. This device is meant to be a temporary heat source and is not designed to stay on all of the time. So by turning it off when you leave the room you are not only saving the heater from breaking but you are also protecting your home and your loved ones from a potential fire.
- On the box it should say whether the space heater has been tested within a testing laboratory that is nationally recognized. A heater that has gone through such testing has had to meet strict and detailed safety standards. A space heater that has not been tested in such a laboratory will not leave consumers with as much assurance that the heater is safe.
