- 1). Locate the gas valve supply knob. The supply valve knob has "Off", "On" and "Pilot" either on the face or on an indicator above the knob. Depending upon the appliance the knob may be in the front or may be behind a louver or doors.
- 2). Find the pilot tube for the appliance. The pilot tube is typically behind the pilot knob with the end of the tube near a burner.
- 3). Push the gas supply valve in and to the "Off" position, if the pilot light has gone out. Wait 10 minutes for the gas fumes to dissipate. If there is a hiss sound or the gas smell does not dissipate, turn off the house gas supply valve and call a service professional to come out and repair any leaks that may be in the line.
- 4). Place some fireplace matches near you after the gas fumes have dissipated and you are ready to light the pilot light. Press the appliance gas valve in and turn it to the "Pilot" position. Light a match and place the flame near the end of the pilot tube while holding the gas valve knob inward. Some appliances may have a separate button near the gas valve to press in rather than the gas supply valve.
- 5). Continue pressing in the gas valve or pilot button after the pilot lights for 60 seconds to allow the thermocouple to warm. Release the gas valve knob and turn it to the "On" position.
