- Whiteheads are closed pimples caused by a completely blocked pore. They look like small white bumps under the skin and generally clear up faster than other types of acne.
- When a pore is only partially blocked, some of the debris can rise to the surface, causing a blackhead. The color results from skin pigment reaction to oxygen, and this type of acne can take a long time to clear up.
- Papules are inflamed, tender, red bumps that do not produce a head. Pustules are similar to papules, but have white to yellowish pus at the center that may indicate bacterial infection.
- Nodules are larger hard lumps under the skin caused by buildup deep in the hair follicle. They are often painful, may take months to clear up and can leave a scar.
- Acne conglobata is one of the most severe types of acne and is characterized by interconnected lesions and numerous blackheads. It usually occurs between age 18 and 30 and can cause severe damage to the skin.
