- 1). Select a theme and design for the homemade coasters. Consider the event for which you are making the coasters. For a princess party, consider a tiara or castle. If you're throwing a Christmas party, add a wreath or Christmas tree to the design. If they are for everyday use around the home, choose a design that matches the home's decor.
- 2). Choose a color of poster board that fits the theme and design of the homemade coasters. For example, choose red or pink for Valentine's Day, pink for a princess party, or red, white and blue for a Fourth of July celebration. Cut the poster board into squares of 4 inches by 4 inches to create the base for the coasters.
- 3). Add the images to the poster board squares. Ideas for applying an image include painting, decoupaging images, or drawing on the poster board. Decoupaging is a simple way to transfer a separate piece of artwork to the coaster. Decoupage medium is the glue that holds the image. The decoupage medium is brushed underneath and on top of the image to adhere it to the poster board. Create the main image and add accents such as stickers or glitter. Allow the coasters to dry fully.
- 4). Cut a square of clear contact paper larger than the coaster. Peel off the backing to reveal the sticky side. Place the contact paper on a flat surface with the sticky side up. Look for contact paper in craft stores or in discount stores near the household items, as it is sometimes used as drawer and shelf liner.
- 5). Center the coaster on the sticky side of the contact paper. Press it down to create a smooth finish.
- 6). Cut another square of contact paper and peel off the backing. Press it on top to sandwich the poster board coaster between the two pieces of contact paper.
- 7). Smooth both sides of the contact paper to remove any bubbles. Trim the excess contact paper, leaving a small border to keep the coasters encased.
