- 1). Measure your inseam in centimeters to determine your standover height. To measure your inseam, stand up straight, without shoes and use a measuring tape to measure from the highest part of your groin to the floor. This will be your inseam measurement.
- 2). Multiply your inseam measurement by .65 using a calculator or paper and pencil. For example, if your inseam is 79 inches, you would multiply 79 by .65, which would equal 51.35 centimeters.
- 3). Subtract 10 centimeters from the product that you obtained from multiplying your inseam by .65. For example, if you had measured a product of 51.35, subtracting 10 would give you 41.35. This number will give you a rough estimate that you can use to choose your mountain bike frame size.
- 4). Convert the measurement in centimeters that you obtained into inches. To convert centimeters to inches multiply the inseam measurement by .3937. In the example, the product would be 16 inches (41.35 multiplied by .3937). Use the frame size equivalents (see Tips) to determine the correct mountain bike frame size using the measurement in inches.
- 5). Try out a few different mountain bike frame sizes before purchasing to find the one that feels best. You should try to adjust the seat, pedals and handlebars after you have found the correct mountain bike frame size. Having a mountain bike that is the correct size for your body will help reduce the risk of injury and make your ride more enjoyable.
