- 1). Earn a bachelor's or associate's degree. The first step in becoming a nurse is earning a degree in nursing. An associate's degree takes two years of full-time study and a bachelor's takes four years of full-time study. These programs are available at colleges and universities. Contact your state board of nursing to find programs in your area.
- 2). Take the national licensing exam. To become a registered nurse, you will need to complete the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX-RN). As of 2010, the cost to take this exam is $200. Prepare for the test by contacting the National Council of State Board Nursing (see Resources) and requesting a study guide. Registration can also be completed online.
- 3). Contact your state board of nursing for local requirements. In addition to taking the NCLEX-RN your state may have additional requirements. For example, some states require nurses to take an exam that tests their knowledge about ethics and local laws.
- 4). Enroll in continuing education. To maintain your licensure, you will need to complete continuing education programs. Contact your state board of nursing to determine local requirements. Typically, continuing education is offered through community colleges and the American Nurses Association (see Resources).
- 5). Apply for positions in doctor's offices. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 8 percent of nurses work in physicians offices (as of 2008). Target local doctor's offices directly to find positions. Check with professional associations, such as the American Nurses Association. Your college career services department is also a good resource for finding positions.
