- 1). Turn off the power to the light box that you will be working on by tripping the circuit breaker.
- 2). Unscrew the face plate of the light box and pull out the wires. You should have two black and one red in addition to the ground wire, which will be either green or bare copper.
- 3). Prepare the light switch for installation by stripping the ends of the wires about 3/8 inch to allow for proper connection. The switch should also have two black wires and one red with a green or bare copper ground wire.
- 4). Connect the wires by matching the light switch wires to the ones of the same color and attach them using the wire nuts. Place the ends next to each other and put a wire nut over them. Turn the nut until they are snug.
- 5). Fold the wires so that they fit into the box and put the switch into place.
- 6). Screw the face plate back onto the box and restore power to the switch.
