- 1). Choose the ideal fabric for your holder. You will need something that is easy to cut and is soft enough to sew together. I recommend using oilcloth or vinyl tablecloths. With these materials you can get clean-cut lines without the frays, and are easy to wipe clean. Easy cleanup is a definite benefit to using a wipeable material. If you are making a set of these utensil holders, think of matching fabric patterns or themes such as Valentine's Day patterns or holiday colors and use these as gift holders.
- 2). Once you have all of your materials ready, cut a 10-inch rectangle from your fabric.
- 3
Fold the fabric in half. Make a pocket for your utensils by cutting the top half of the front cover off. To add some interest to the fabric, you can cut the slit in a slight diagonal. Make sure you first mark where you want to cut lightly with a pencil. If you chose a patterned fabric you can add some contrast by inserting a solid color patch that pops out about half an inch above your slit. To do this, measure the length of the bottom of the holder to half an inch above your slit and cut accordingly. Insert it between the folded rectangle. - 4). Sew the bottom and the open side together about 1/8 inch from the edge (along with the solid color insert, if applicable).
- 5). Place utensils inside the front pocket and napkins can be placed in the top pocket.
