How to Draft a Job Proposal for an Advancement

    • 1). Complete a self-assessment of your current skills, strengths and challenges. Identify some areas of improvement, such as working on your interpersonal skills or learning a new software program. The main key is to find ways that you can position yourself for a new job, as well as figure out what type of new position is the best fit for you.

    • 2). Research the company in which you plan to present a new job proposal. If you want to stay at your current company, then you may have access to internal strategic plans, quarterly earnings reports and other private information. If you want to propose a new job at a new company, find recent press releases on the business, talk to other company employees and try to learn as much as you can about the company’s mission, current challenges and corporate culture.

    • 3). Choose a job title and position that best fits your current strengths and skills, as well as a position that will most benefit the employer. You may have more luck if you propose a revenue-generating position, rather than a purely administrative position, unless the company has well-known organizational problems or issues. For example, if you are a social media expert in your private life and the company has a need for better marketing strategies, you could propose a social media marketing position.

    • 4). Conduct research to back your proposed job. For example, if you are currently a copywriter at an ad agency and you want to get promoted or receive a raise to write the ads in Spanish, you’ll need to provide proof that the company needs ads in Spanish. Put together a list of current and prospective clients that target the Hispanic market, as well as the estimated increase in profits.

    • 5). Write a job description that clearly states your proposed job responsibilities and duties. You’ll also want to create an overview, backed by facts and statistics from your research, about why this position is integral to the future success of the company.

    • 6). Choose a contact person for your proposal. For example, if you have a great relationship with your immediate boss and want to stay within the company, talk to him about your idea first. He may be able to give you valuable advice about how to go about proposing your idea. If you work for someone who may want to hinder your advancement, talk to your human resources representative about the procedure for presenting a new position.
