- 1). Measure from the bed of your truck to the top of the cab and add six inches. This will be the overall height of your rack. Cut four pieces of treated 2-by-2 lumber to this dimension, plus six inches. These are your corner posts.
- 2). Stand the posts up in the stake pockets in the four corners of the truck bed. Measure the distance inside to inside along the bed rail between the front and back posts on one side. Cut four pieces of 2-by-4 to that length. Set one of the these pieces on top of the bed rail at each side of the truck, between the posts. Drill two pilot holes with 1/8 inch bit through the post, into the end of the 2-by-4 on each end. Attach using two 3-inch treated deck screws in each joint.
- 3). Measure down from the top of each corner post and mark it at 6-inches. Attach the remaining two pieces between the posts on each side with their top edges on the mark. Dill pilot holes and attach as for the lower pieces.
- 4). Measure between the posts at the bottom, along the front bed panel side to side. Cut 6 pieces of 2-by-4 to this dimension. Attach two of them across the bed of the truck between the front posts, one along the top of the front bed panel, one six inches down from the top as for the side rails. Attach one six inches down from the top between the two back posts.
- 5). Position the remaining pieces evenly spaced across the top of the rack, between the top 2-by-4 rails you installed. Use two screws in every joint.
