- 1). Press up on the large latch on the back of the 7100i to remove the battery cover. Slide the SIM card into place on the right side of the battery compartment. The metal contacts on the SIM card should be facing down and away from you. Slide the battery into place so that the four metal contacts on the battery are aligned with the four metal contacts near the top of the battery chamber. Replace the battery cover and turn the device on with the power button, located on the top of the phone, next to the antenna.
- 2). Make a phone call by dialing the number using the keys in the middle of the dial pad. Press the green button to complete the call. While on the call, you can use the thumbwheel on the side of the device to raise or lower the volume. You can also engage the speakerphone by pressing the button that has a little picture of a speaker on the top of the phone. Press the red button to end the call.
- 3). Answer an incoming call by pressing the green button. You can also choose to ignore the call and send the caller to voicemail by pressing the red button.
- 4). Rotate the thumbwheel to navigate through all the menu and list screens on the 7100i. Your current selection will be highlighted and as you move the thumbwheel, the highlight will move to your new selection. Press the thumbwheel to access your current selection. If you press in on the thumbwheel when there is no item to select, a menu of options will open up. Use the escape button, located just below the thumbwheel, to move back to the previous screen.
- 5). Check your voice mail by first scrolling to the phone icon and pressing in on the thumbwheel. Then hold down the "1" key. The first time you access your voicemail, you will have to set up a password, then enter a greeting and record your name. After that you will only have to enter your password to access your voicemail. If you don't want to have to do that, you can go to "Options" on the "Phone" screen. Then choose "Voicemail" and scroll to the field next to "Additional numbers" and enter your password there.
- 6). Enter text in a field by pressing the key that has your desired letter on it. In the default text setting, called SureType, as you type the 7100i will determine what word you want. If you get to the end of a word and it is not the word you want, use the thumbwheel to scroll to other possible words. Press the space key to move to the next word. The other typing method is called multi-tap and you get there by holding the "*" key for a few seconds. In Multitap, you have to press each key once to get the first letter listed on the key, or twice to get the second letter listed on the key.
