How to Fix an Unbalanced Fan

    • 1). Turn off the ceiling fan either by the pull chain or wall switch. Set up a step stool under the fan so you can safely reach the blades.

    • 2). Tighten each of the screws connecting the fan blades to their respective brackets with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Sometimes screws become loose, causing the fan to be out of balance. Clean the fan blades with household spray cleaner and a rag. This removes dust buildup that causes unbalanced blades. Turn on the fan to check the balance of the blades. Turn off the fan if the blades are still out of balance.

    • 3). Wait for the blades to stop turning completely. Measure the distance from the edge of a blade to the ceiling with a tape measure. Mark down the measurement on a piece of paper. Rotate the blades to measure the next blade at the same spot from the ceiling. Gently bend any blade that is not the same distance as the others. Turn the fan back on to check the balance. If the fan is still out of balance, turn off the fan.

    • 4). Slide a balancing clip from the balancing kit over highest side of any blade, between the tip of the blade and the mounting bracket. Operate the fan to check for wobble. Turn off the fan, and slide the clip up or down the length of the blade. Turn on the fan again to check for wobble. Repeat on all of the fan blades that wobble.

    • 5). Attach a weight to the top of the fan blade with tape, in line with the clip. Operate the fan and check the wobble. Most out of balance blades will run smooth with the weight and clip. Turn off the fan and remove the weight, making note of its position on the blade. Peel off the self-adhesive paper on the weight, and press the weight firmly on the blade. Repeat for all blades that are out of balance.
