- If you have a new computer with a blank hard drive and are planning to build the system from scratch, calculate your operating system size and triple that number to give yourself a healthy amount of space for basic operation. The more free space, the better.
- Computers create a lot of temporary files out of necessity; these "Temp" files help the system run smoothly. Occasionally cleaning the temp files out of your system to free hard disk space will help the computer to run better.
- The computer uses free space on the hard disk to provide services like virtual memory. While RAM is useful in scenarios where information is quickly shifting, less-memory-intensive tasks are often relegated to virtual memory on the hard disk. In maintaining hard disk integrity, the hard disk must defragment; this requires 15 percent of the total hard disk space.
