How to Close Fireplace Doors When the Fire Is Dying Down

    • 1). Use the screen while the fire burns actively. This enables you to see and hear the fire to enjoy it. You will also be able to feel the fire heat emanating through the screen.

    • 2). Replace the screen door with a tight fitting glass door and place it securely onto the fireplace when you decide to allow the fire to die down. Sealing the fireplace from the inside of your home becomes extremely important when the fire dies down because, as the fire stops putting off extreme heat, the chimney will stop pulling smoke up and out of the fireplace. This means toxic carbon monoxide will instead enter your home if you don't seal the door.

    • 3). Keep the chimney damper open while the fire burns down. If you close the damper before the fire goes out completely, the fire may become hotter instead, which can lead to carbon monoxide entering your home. Close the chimney damper only after the fire goes out and no embers remain hot.
