- 1). Pick the types of trims according to your custom-style belt sketch like the vintage swag chain link belt. It will most likely include multiple chains linked in a scallop or swag pattern across the hip, which are available in different, widths, shapes and lengths. Other concept ideas are dangling beads as well as metal end plates or velvet ribbons for closures.
- 2). Pick the bead type and shape to dangle on the chain link according to your design. Bead types like metal, precious metal clay (PMC), polymer clay, bone, diachronic glass and crystal must complement the style inspiration. For instance, recycle old beads, or shop in secondhand vintage stores to find vintage beads.
Certain trims such as freshwater pearls are available in different shapes such as nugget, potato, teardrop and stick. - 3). Pick your jewelry findings, which refers to metal hardware components used to hold, link, attach and close beaded and chain link projects. It is important for the findings and chain links to complement the design.
- 4). Measure your hips by placing the flexible tape measure around your natural hip-bone line. This measurement will be the length of the belt. It is meant to drape comfortably along the hip line.
- 5). Measure the swag length. For instance, if your belt length is 36 inches, 6 inch swags will produce six swags across the belt.
- 6). Arrange your beads on your bead board. If your design includes beaded swags, you must construct each swag separately.
According to "Bead Love," Jane Laferla writes, "Bead boards allow you to organize and lay out beads for your design while helping you measure length with precision." You will most likely have to adjust your sketch as your chain link design comes to life on the bead board. - 1). Open the link with your chain-nose pliers, and remove excess chain links according to your belt and swag length. Refer to your dimension from section 1, steps 4 and 5.
- 2). Open your jump rings and insert it through the swag link. Slide your bead onto the ring and close it with your chain-nose pliers. You will need to repeat this step until your beaded swags are complete.
- 3). Attach the swags to your hip chain link by opening another jump ring and inserting it through the belt's chain link. Slide the swag link onto the ring, and close it with your pliers. Make sure the swags appear scalloped prior to closing the rings. Repeat this step for each swag on your belt.
- 4). Cut 2 pieces of 1-1/2-inch width velvet ribbon in your desired length with your scissors. The longer the ribbon, the larger the bow loops will be at the back of your belt for closure.
- 5). Insert one ribbon end onto the chain link end, and form an open loop. Slide the ribbon end through the loop, and pull until the knot forms around the chain link. Cut the excess ribbon diagonally to avoid fraying. Repeat with the remaining ribbon. Tie your ribbons at back to secure your custom vintage belt.
