How to Replace the Power Steering Pump in a 1988 4Runner

    • 1). Place the drain pan under the power steering pump. Remove the cap/dipstick. Remove the clamp on the low-pressure power steering hose on the back of the pump. Place this hose so as to drain into the pan.The low pressure hose is attached to the pump with a clamp, while the "high-side" hose uses a threaded fitting.

    • 2). Remove the high-pressure hose from the back of the pump, turning the fitting counterclockwise with a line wrench. Place the end of this hose so as to drain into the pan. Remove the drive pulley bolt by turning it counterclockwise with a wrench.

    • 3). Loosen the idler pulley and adjuster bolts by turning them counterclockwise with a ratchet and socket. Mark the outer edge of the drive belt with a piece of chalk, so you can reinstall it with the same orientation, and remove the belt.

    • 4). Hold the new pump in place and thread the nuts and bolts into the bracket. Torque the nuts and bolts to 28 foot pounds. Install the pulley onto the pump and thread the pulley bolt on clockwise by hand.

    • 5). Attach the pressure hose to the pump, turning the hose fitting clockwise until hand tight. Tighten with a line wrench.

    • 6). Fill the new pump with new power steering fluid. Turn the pump pulley clockwise by hand to pump new fluid through the lines until clean fluid emits from the low pressure hose into the pan.

    • 7). Attach the low pressure hose to the power steering pump. Tighten the clamp with the small straight screwdriver.

    • 8). Install the drive belt, making sure your chalk mark faces out. Tighten the adjuster bolt and then the idler pulley bolt. Torque the pump pulley bolt to 32 foot-pounds.

    • 9). Start the engine and allow the fluid to come to operating temperature. Turn the steering wheel left and right from lock to lock repeatedly to work the air out of the system. Turn off the engine. Check the fluid level and add as needed.
