- 1). Move the dryer away from the wall so you can get behind it. Next, remove the cover on the back---near the bottom of the appliance---with a screwdriver to access the electrical terminal plate. This is located just behind the cover and has a series of screws attached to it. Two of these screws are brass, one is silver and one is green. The silver screw is usually located between the two brass screws. If the dryer is an older model, the green screw, which is for ground, might be missing.
- 2). Unscrew one of the brass screws from the terminal plate and insert it through the lug on the black or red wire on the pigtail. There may be a legend on the terminal specifying whether to connect the red or black wire to that screw; if so, follow the legend. In reality, though, the red and black wires are both hot, carry the same voltage and are interchangeable between the brass terminals. Replace the screw with the lug attached and tighten it, then attach the other hot wire to the other brass terminal in the same way.
- 3). Connect the white wire to the silver terminal by putting the silver screw through the lug and tightening it onto the terminal.
- 4). Connect the ground wire to the green ground terminal. If there is a ground strap connecting the ground to the neutral terminal, remove it first. If the dryer is an older model with only three terminals, drill a hole in the metal body of the dryer and attach the ground wire by screwing it into the hole with a separate ground screw.
- 5). Replace the cover, push the dryer back into position and plug it in.
